Reviews

“This volume is a distinctive, original, and refreshing approach to the study of Anglo-American relations. Each essay is not just an outstanding contribution to a stellar book, but rather each one opens the door for future scholarship.” • James Cooper, St. John University

Anglo-American Relations and the Transmission of Ideas is a tremendous collection of works focusing on the transatlantic transmission of ideas from correspondence to politics, from race and the construction of identities to law, and from the Anglosphere to empire.” • Christopher Jespersen, University of North Georgia

Description

Too often, scholarship on Anglo-American political relations has focused on mutual social and economic interests between Britain and the United States as the basis for cooperation. Breaking new ground, Anglo-American Relations and the Transmission of Ideas instead explores how ideas, on either side of the Atlantic have mutually influenced each other. In those transnational interactions, there forms a shared tradition of political ideas, facilitating “a common cast of mind” that has served as the basis for transatlantic relations and socio-political values for decades.

Alan P. Dobson (1951-2022) was Honorary Professor at Swansea University; he held Chairs at Dundee University and at St Andrews (Honorary); and Fellowships at the Norwegian Nobel Institute (Senior Research Fellowship), Saint Bonaventure University (Lenna), and Baylor University (Fulbright).

Steve Marsh is Reader in international politics at Cardiff University, UK. His principal research interests lie in post-World War Two international politics with a particular focus on American foreign policy and Anglo-American relations. His latest book, (2020, co-edited with Robert M Hendershot), is Culture Matters. Anglo-American Relations and the Intangibles of Specialness.
